One great way to improve your listening skills is to listen to podcasts. Podcasts are very helpful for ESL learners for the following reasons:

° There are a variety of topics to choose from
° The speakers are often experts on a topic
° You can play them over, and over, and over….
° Finally, they are free and easy to install.

How much should I listen to?

Please listen to at least 1/2 hour a week.

What should I listen to? What topic?

You can choose any topic that you think is interesting.

Easy or difficult?

Finding appropriate levels can sometimes be challenging. It is your responsibility to spend enough time finding a podcast that is appropriate for your level. You should learn some new vocabulary, but most vocabulary should be easy for you to understand. As a general rule, ESL podcasts are easier than those at cbc.ca.

Do I need to hand in anything?

In a word, yes. You will turn in two written reports during the term. Each report will be on a different podcast that you choose.

What should be in my report?

1. Notetaking (10 marks) I page minimum

Please make notes while you listen. Your notes should be organized and clear, and they must show the main idea(s) and some specific detail of the podcast.

I recommend that you hand-write your notes, but if you prefer to type while you listen, you can do that as well.
Please hand your notes to me. They don’t have to be perfect. In fact, I want your notes to look as realistic as possible.

2. Vocabulary (5 marks), 1 page

Please note at least 5 new vocabulary words. Check the spelling of each word, and write down a synonym/antonym or definition as well.

3. Response journal (10 marks) 1-2 pages double spaced.

After you complete your notes, think about the information from the podcast. Write 1-2 pages answering some/all of the questions below.

° Was the podcast appropriate for your level (too easy or too difficult)? Why or why not?

° How many speakers did the podcast have? Describe the speaker(s). Who was the main speaker? How would you describe his/her vocabulary? What about the vocabulary of other speakers? How clear was the voice of the speaker(s)? Did the person(s) have an accent or dialect? Did this have an effect on your ability to understand what was said? What kind of person do you think the speaker is (friendly, kind, confident, shy, aggressive, etc.)?

° What was the format of the podcast? Was it a lecture? An interview?

° Do you want to learn more about the topic? Why or why not? If so, how will you learn more?

PLEASE NOTE: I will be marking your response journal for grammar and mechanics (10 marks).
